Friends have asked me about my apparent “obsession” with Beyoncé. Yes, I’m going there, but it’s gonna be good, I promise. First, let me clarify by saying it’s not an obsession. Rather, a fascination. And, it’s not with her, but with her willpower, control and determination as an individual.
I am fascinated by a lot of people actually, but I use Beyoncé as an example because, in today’s society, she is regarded by some as “royalty” and the most out of reach. She is someone that many joke is a mythical creature of magic and sorcery.
Here’s the thing: She ain’t!
She is a human being, just like you and I. One who, from a young age, knew what she wanted and pushed herself to see those aspirations through. In the process of following her heart, I assume she learned what it meant to be in control of her life and her decisions. Of course there was influence and conflict, but it’s obvious that she never gave all her power away. That’s my perspective anyway.
Sure, not all of us will skyrocket to fame and fortune if we follow our hearts. That’s not my point. My point is that we need to remain in control of ourselves. To not hold so much doubt. To not give too much of ourselves away, but to not hold back when you feel the urge to create.
Beyoncé works her butt off. Where she is today is a direct result of her steadfast determination and strength to just be B. We’re not going to wind up on her path if we do the same. That’s the beauty of life – we all have our own! In one way or another, it’s just a matter of how furiously we keep moving forward and maintain control in the chaos.
So, yes, I have a fascination with Beyoncé, but because of why she started and why she’s still going. It’s not about her fame or her music. It’s about her doing HER THING. I get psyched when a song of her’s comes on my shuffle because it’s a celebration of someone who had the courage to go for it, to use her time wisely and to take control of her life. Do you really think she would be doing anything she didn’t really want to do? You can live your life with that same kind of gumption!
If you want to entertain or paint or walk dogs or sell antiques, it doesn’t matter what. It matters WHY.
Is this particular avenue one that will bring you happiness and contentment? Does it challenge you? Does it make you a better person? Is it worth giving your all for?
It’s time to get what’s yours. After all, you have the same amount of time in a day as Beyoncé. Go be your own B!
